Kpop Weekly Chart 2010 : March Week 4

1. (+1) T-Ara – 너 때문에 미쳐 (Crazy Because Of You) *** 1 WEEK NO. 1 ***

Album: T-Ara Vol. 1 Repackaged Version Track 1
Comment: With the album sales score of their repackaged album being taken into account this week, T-Ara overtook Kara for the No. 1 spot with their latest hit “Crazy Because of You”. This song was made by an all-star combination: co-composed by Jo Young Soo and Kim Tae Hyun and penned by Wheesung. This dance track has a pop feel with electronic sounds. 2010 is not even three months in and this is already T-Ara’s second No. 1 song and third top 10 hits. Congratulations.

2. (-1) Kara – 루팡 (Lupin)

Comment: After two weeks at the top, Kara fell back one spot to No. 2 with “Lupin”. After surprisingly winning the top female group on our last year’s Soompi Gayo Award, Kara continues their strong showing on our chart. The title song “Lupin” is from their recently released 3rd mini-album of the same name. Kara vowed to return to a more fierce image on this mini-album, a concept that did not fare too well when they used it on their debut album. But that was then and this is now. Kara has developed a large and loyal fan base now and fans are more receptive of their change in concept this time.

3. (+3) Outsider – 주변인 (Outsider)

Genre: Hip-hop

Album: Outsider Vol. 2.5 Track 2
Comment: Outsider broke into the mainstream last year with his fastest rap and the big hit “Loner”. Now he is back with his 2.5 album. The title song literally means “Outsider” as well, and it moves up three more spots into the top 3 this week. The song has dramatic beats and was composed by Master Key and Rhymer and penned by the artist himself. Fans will have a chance to listen to Outsider’s unique fast rap once again.

4. (+3) Beast – Shock

Album: Beast mini-album Vol. 2 Track 2
Comment: Fast rising boy band Beast scores their first top 5 hit, moving up threes spots this week with “Shock”, from their mini-album “Shock Of The New Era”. Shock” which was composed by Shinsadong Tiger and Lee Sang Ho combo, has powerful synth loops, comparable to heavy metal guitar rifts and has exciting rhythms.

5. (+24) Epik High – Run *** BIGGEST MOVER OF THE WEEK ***

Album: Epik High Special Album “Epilouge” Track 2
Comment: Reducing to a duo at the moment as DJ Tukutz is being enlisted in the army, Epik High comes back with a special album “Epilouge”. The title track “Run” is our biggest mover this week, moving up 24 big spots into the top 5. “Run” revolves around the theme of hope. These are for those with “ill” from the society or those with high hopes but restrained from reality. The song tells listeners to continue to “run” until the end; its increasing rhythms help bring out this effect.

6. (+19) K.Will (feat. Eun Ji Won) – 선물 (Present)

Genre: Pop Ballad

Album: K.Will digital single “Present” Track 1
Comment: Another big mover into the top 10 this week is K.Will’s latest hit “Present”. K.Will returns this spring with a new single, “Present” featuring hip-hop rapper Eun Ji Won. It is a medium tempo track about wanting to give the most beautiful present to a loved one. K.Will’s voice blends well with the instruments of the song.

7. (+4) December – 배운 게 사랑이라 (Learned My Lesson In Love)

Comment: R&B duo December scores their first ever top 10 hit this week. Their latest song “Learned My Lesson In Love” is up four spots to No. 7. December’s style reminded us of Monday Kiz, with both members have good singing skills and their power R&B ballad genre has been very popular in K-pop for the last few years.

8. (-4) Min Kyung Hoon – 아프니까 사랑이죠 (It’s Love Because It Hurts)

Comment: Min Kyung Hoon makes a comeback after two years with a five track mini album. The singer has taken part in selecting these songs carefully. The title track “It’s Love Because It Hurts” is written by Cho Young Soo and Kang Eun Kyung. It has an intense violin intro before settling into a beautiful ballad melody. This week it drops four spots to No. 8.

Comment: Title song of 2AM’s third mini album. The 4 sweet voices of 2AM meet ballad hit maker, song writer Bang Shi-hyuk in this song that grabbed much attention. Comment: A surprise hot shot debut to many this week, Jung In’s first solo hit “Hate You” enters our chart at No. 10. Fans might have heard of Jung In featured in many Lee Ssang’s songs in the past. The former lead singer of R&B group G.Fla finally have the stage all by herself this time with her first mini-album “Jung In From Andromeda”. Her talent is highly praised by industry insiders and her unique voice is perfect for R&B songs. “Hate You” is written by Panic’s Lee Juck. With such strong competitions from many idol singers, Jung In still manages to make it into the top 10 in the first week. That is an amazing accomplishment.

11. (-3) 4men (feat. 美) – 못해 (Can’t Do)

Album: 4men Special Album “The 3rd Generation” Track 2
Comment: Title song of 4Men’s special album entitled “The 3rd Generation.” Written by Vibe’s Yoon Min-soo, the rhythm is tension-filled till the end, with heart-breaking lyrics and the sound of Shin Yong-jae’s explosive vocals. Comment: This is the title track of Girls’ Generation’s second studio album. It is a sophisticated electronic pop genre song that was written by hit-maker Kenzie. 13. (+4) MC Mong (feat. Seo In Young) – Bubble Love

Comment: MC Mong, who is largely responsible for bringing hip-hop style ballads to k-pop with many great past hits like “A Letter Written To You”, “I Love U Oh Thank You” etc., is teaming up with top songwriter Cho Young Soo and the vocal of Seo In Young for his latest hit “Bubble Love”. This song is part of Cho Young Soo’s last “All Star” series (Vol. 2.5). This week it moves up four spots to No. 13. Be sure to check out this song if you like MC Mong’s past hip-hop ballads.

14. (-4) U-Kiss – 빙글빙글 (Spinning)

Comment: This is the title track of U-Kiss’ first studio album “U-Kiss Only One Album.” It is a combination of electronic and hip-hop genres. Comment: Younger generation of K-pop fans may not be familiar with the members of this project group. However, if you have listened to k-pop for more than 10 years or if you like old skool k-pop music, they are household names. M4 consists of members Bae Ki Sung (from CAN), Lee Se Joon (from Yurisangja), Kim Won Joon, and Choi Jae Hoon. The four good friends get together and named themselves M4 – the middle aged version of F4. Their title song “Melody For You” is a sincere ballad. It remains at No. 15 this week. M4 has been actively promoting this song on music shows to boost its popularity.

16. (-7) CNBlue – 외톨이야 (Loner)

Comment: Hip-hop duo, Mighty Mouth and veteran singer, Baek Ji Young collaborates with a new single, “Will Love Come.” This duet track is of the popular electro-hop (electronica and hip-hop) genre. The music video stars Lee Yong Woo and Gook Ji Yeon who starred in the drama series, Boys Over Flowers. This week the song debuts at No. 17.

This week it drops back four spots to No. 18.

Comment: 8Eight has firmly established themselves as the top mixed group in Korea now. They are coming back and trying out a new style on their music. Previously, the trio is known for their R&B ballads. Their latest single, “Availability Period” is an electronic pop number, showing a different side of the group. The song is about the sadness of breakup and the vocals and rap of the members harmonize well with one another.
